I've heard tell from older Taurus fans that their quality has gone up over the years. Taurus is slowly but surely beating it's hit-or-miss reputation by the sound of things Saving up for my first "big" gun, and this was the one that hit the mark for everything i wanted in a self-defense pistol. Got any tips for where i should look to buy used? Any particular website you're a fan of, or do you just go to your local gun shop and order there? Thank you in advance

Whats your technique to painting the sights?

Do some research my friend, lots of websights out there have updated barrels and springs to make the action smoother on both of those guns. I have other guns but my upgraded g2c shots very well. And im still less than 400 in upgrades and gun purchase price.

Make sure NOTHING touches that slide shile shooting. On mine I found even a slight touch of a digit would take enough inertia off the slide to make the pistol fail to function. I also had bought some of the german made magazines, to help add a little heft and found they were not well formed in the lips and prone to cause feeding issues. Now I use strictly Pro Mags and or OEM poly magazines. Those both work perfectly in my Kimber. To get some aditional ballast in the pistol I added a stainless Mag Well. I Installed rosewood grip panels and inset some 1/16" sheel lead in the grip panel recesses. Now it feel much better ballanced. Broke in the pistol by cycling the action perhaps 7 to 8 hundred times so as to get that super light slide to run completely free and smoothe. My result was a well balanced pistol that cycles perfectly. Truth be told mine ran pretty well right from the start. The issues I did have mostly came from my grip impinging on the slide. I first noticed that quirk when I tried using the slide release. The gun would fail to go into battery most of the time I played with the release. That light little slide is super susceptible to being deflected. What you are relating makes me think yours is at least partly (though not all) a problem with the slide being slightly bound up. Sorry to hear of the problems. I think Kimber simply tried to make the pistol too light when they really did not need to at all.

I have one since the 90’s. It works great. Has never jammed once, shoots great. Made a pocket holster and carry in front pocket.

12# was a smart choice. I went with an 11# and it's too light. The ignition has been fine so far with the 11# but then again I've been shooting Federals. What I mean is, single action just feels too light with 11#. You can barely feel the wall. Definitely a bit too light for a carry gun. Personally I think it's a bit light even for a target/match gun, but that may just be me.

I have one, it's a beauty with a slide that is BUTTER SMOOTH!!!!!

I got one that was full of lint, old oil, and had sights starting to rust. I cleaned it thoroughly, installed new Sig XRAY 3 sights and replaced the springs. $350 for a 1995 production SA-171** did not seem bad. It does not appear to have been fired often.

I suggest takin a look at the factory extended magazines. One more round and the grip is SO much better.
